Beats, Rhymes & Life es el cuarto álbum de este genial grupo del rap underground. Lanzado en 1996, seguido tres años después del muy apreciado disco "Midnight & Marauders". Este álbum es una salida de la onda alegre y positiva de los primeros álbumes y es considerado como el más oscuro álbum del grupo en su contenido.
El álbum también fue la primera en presentar el trabajo de producción de The Ummah grupo que se componía de Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad y Jay Dee. Este álbum también cuenta con la colaboracion de Consequence con frecuencia en el álbum, lo que hizo que muchos pensaran que fue un nuevo miembro. Slum Village - Fantastic Volume 2.10 (2010)

Slum Village es un grupo de hip hop de Detroit, Míchigan. Comenzó siendo un trío, con Baatin, T3 y J Dilla como miembros.
Crecieron juntos en Conant Gardens, un barrio de Detroit, y fueron al instituto Pershing. El grupo se hizo popular en la escena underground de Detroit. J Dilla también se hizo miembro de un equipo de producción conocido como The Ummah, quienes produjeron varios éxitos de artistas de R&B y rap. El primer álbum de Slum Village, Fantastic, Vol. 1, en 1996, no fue liberado oficialmente hasta el año 2005, y sería un auténtico clásico del rap underground.
Firmados primeramente por el sello ahora desaparecido A&M, el grupo tuvo que posponer la fecha de lanzamiento de su álbum de debut debido a la política del sello, pero en junio de 2000 salió a la venta Fantastic, Vol. 2, bajo GoodVibe Recordings. También ese año grabaron un disco llamado Best Kept Secret, bajo el alias J-88, en el que se incluía remixes y canciones descartadas del Fantastic, Vol. 1. Bueno, a disfrutar de estos tres discos de este gran grupo del underground hip hop.
